Question No. 20
Something very funny happened to me the other day. I was walking along, enjoying the springtime weather, when somebody came up behind me and said, “Hi, Emily. How are you?” My name’s Emily, so, of course, I turned around right away to see who was talking to me. There was this really good-looking guy right behind me who had a nice big smile. I didn’t recognize him at all, but my first reaction was to smile back and say, “Hi, how are you?” He just walked on by, and then I realized that he was talking on a cellphone.
Question No. 21
Hello, Mr. Sasaki? This is Mel’s Travel Agency calling from Australia. I’m afraid that the tour you booked for next week has been cancelled because there weren’t enough people to go. However, we have a similar tour to Australia, except this one will go to Melbourne instead of Brisbane. The rest of the plan is the same, including the price. That is, you’ll spend the last three days in Sydney, and you’ll stay at the best hotels. And, of course, breakfast is included in the price. Please call us back and let us know what you think.
Question No. 22
Thank you for inviting me for an interview. Let me tell you about myself. I have a very strong interest in assisting people in need as well as a long-time interest in Asia. After high school, I went to Cambodia with a group of volunteers to help some villagers build a school playground. I also learned a bit of the language. Later, in college, I studied the Indonesian language and culture along with my classes in engineering. So, with my professional training and language skills, I feel I could contribute significantly to your team effort to help the earthquake victims.
Questions No. 23 to 25
I have always been a book lover, but I didn’t read books from anywhere other than my parents’ private collection until I started high school. My parents are immigrants from South Korea. They are well-educated people who enjoy reading all kinds of books from science fiction to philosophy, but they only read books written in their own language. Because I wanted to share their reading experience, I learned to read much better and faster in Korean than in English, even though I was born here and have lived in an English-speaking country all my life.
All this changed dramatically, however, when a wonderful library opened in the center of our community. The new library has more than ten thousand books in many languages, but mostly in English. It opened shortly after I entered high school, and it has turned me into a real bilingual and multicultural reader, like many of my friends who are from all over the world. With them, I have finally discovered the pleasure of reading in two languages. I now enjoy the experience of seeing the world through both English and Korean, learning about various cultures, and exchanging ideas from multiple points of view.
