Question No. 20
Email provides a fast and easy way to exchange formal and informal information. But you must remember, just like a poorly written letter, a carelessly written email can leave a bad impression. In addition to being careful with grammar, there are other rules for writing email. Avoid using only capital letters because it may give your reader an impression of being shouted at. Don’t use too many abbreviations, or short forms, which could be irritating to those who are not used to them. You should reread your email before sending it. Email is fun and convenient, but it’s important to be careful when writing email messages.
Question No. 21
People have always wondered if animals can think and make decisions. Recently, scientists have observed many instances of clever behavior in animals. One example is the behavior of George, a chimpanzee. One day, while George was watching, a scientist hid a piece of fruit in the sand. Soon, more chimpanzees came around, so George pretended he didn’t know about the fruit. Later, George waited for the other chimpanzees to fall asleep. Then, he secretly dug up the fruit and ate it without waking them. The scientists were quite surprised.
Question No. 22
Antarctica, the huge continent at the Earth’s South Pole, is a place where scientists from nearly thirty countries carry out research. One team from the American Space Agency has developed an underwater robotic vehicle to explore an ice-covered lake there. With this special vehicle, scientists were able to study the huge area under the lake for the first time. They intend to use this vehicle for space operations, such as exploring the icy oceans on one of Jupiter’s moons, Europa. Robotic vehicles like this will have many uses in the future.
Questions No. 23 to 25
Most people think of luck as only a matter of chance, but did you know that there are ways to improve your luck?
Apparently, lucky people tend to have more variety in their lives. They aren’t afraid of new experiences. This helps them notice and take advantage of chance opportunities. Unlucky people miss chance opportunities because they are focused on routines and are too busy going after specific objectives.
Another difference is how a person handles an unlucky event. For example, imagine that your wallet is stolen. The wallet is found and returned to you. All the money is gone, but your driver’s license and credit cards are still there. Unlucky people will say it was their bad luck to have their money stolen. Lucky people will say it was fortunate not to have lost their other valuable items. Some people call this “counter-factual thinking.”
You can train yourself to think differently and feel luckier. You can add variety to your life, become more flexible, and have an open mind. Also, when something bad happens, imagine that things could have been worse. The way we think and behave seems to allow us to experience more good luck.
